My family’s reaction to seeing Manuela Fresil’s film about Annecy’s aslyum-seeking children, by Claude Kular

Yesterday we attended the first public projection of “The Good Wheat and the Tares” by Manuela Frésil, as a family.

What an amazing projection and message that was! We were all very moved by the film but for my boys (15 and 17 years old) it was a real reality check! This is what is happening on our doorsteps, their daily “turf”, near school, the train station, the shopping center, in the small privileged town of Annecy. Yet, they never saw any of it! These children, these families, living of nothing; hidden amongst us

Manuela has done an amazing job at capturing the daily struggle and suffering for so many children and their families, who are running from the danger and poverty in their country and simply trying to make a life in a stable and safe environment. Living in temporary shelters; sometimes on the street, the children seem contented, and patient. Unaware of their bravery and ability to survive these terrible conditions, they are so far from the reality of our children.

Saddened by this crude reality, the documentary was a wake up call for us. We remember how lucky we are and are inspired to do more with those who are already helping, in silence, with their unconditional generosity.

It is a stunning documentary, beautifully filmed, and full of emotions and strong messages. Out in cinemas mid October, we recommend it strongly!
